Lowe’s Sued for Sexual Harassment of Young Employees

August 21, 2009

According to a recently filed lawsuit, three young employees of Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse, Inc. were sexually harassed by their supervisors and co-workers. The company agreed to settle with the employees, to the tune of $1.7 million.

Lowe’s is the nation’s second largest home improvement retailer, with more than 1,675 stores. One female employee said that she was sexually assaulted by her boss in his office after she received a promotion. The 21-year-old woman says that she was repeatedly propositioned by the 44-year-old manager.

Other plaintiffs in the case included two 20-something young men. They said that department heads called them gay, even though they both identify as heterosexual. When they made complaints about the harassment that they received from their co-workers, their boss told them to avoid spending time together.

Lowe’s stores in Washington and Oregon will now have to implement a sexual harassment awareness education program.
