Sex Discrimination Definition

A broad sex discrimination definition is that sexual discrimination is any action that occurs when a person is the victim of unequal or different treatment when that treatment is based on the person's sex status. Sex discrimination first became illegal in 1964 with Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. Although sex discrimination may take place in a variety of different social settings, it most commonly takes place in the workplace. Many different actions fall under the category of sex discrimination. For instance, if a person is passed over for promotion, or not hired in the first place because of that person's gender, that is considered to be sex discrimination. In addition, granting unequal pay based on gender, all forms of sexual harassment, and even denying a worker leave for complications during pregnancy and during childbirth are all forms of sex discrimination. Sex discrimination is a federal offense and complaints of sex discrimination should always be handled efficiently and effectively.
