The number of sexual harassment cases and claims continue to rise within the workplace. Throughout the nineties, complaints filed with Equal Employment Opportunity Commission nearly doubled. The number of civil rights lawsuits also increased, since 1992 to more than 100%. Sexual harassment became a form of gender discrimination, with the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in 1986. In 1991, Congress worked to give victims more in return by allowing a jury and compensation, along with punitive damages in sexual harassment cases. In the same year, the Anita Hill vs. Clarence confirmation hearing laid the groundwork for national awareness of sexual harassment. After the exposure to live coverage of accusations by Hill of Thomas, making use of language that was inappropriate and sexually harassing other female co-workers, people grew more aware of the issue with sexual harassment. The year following, cases of sexual harassment filed, increased by fifty percent. Additionally, the tailhook scandal brought attention to the disparities within the armed forces.
